What is Gum Disease in Dogs and How to Prevent It

According to statistics, over 80% of dogs over the age of three have dental disease. Gum disease, also called periodontal disease, is one of the most common dental problems seen in dogs.

The Causes of gum disease

Dogs’ alkaline mouth can cause plaque formation. Apart from that, most people do not clean dogs' teeth every day. It can contribute to plaque and tartar build-up. Some behaviours such as dog grooming themselves also carry a higher risk of getting the disease. In addition, poor nutrition can also give rise to gum disease.

The symptoms of gum disease include:

Feeling hard for picking up food
Chewing on one side of the mouth
swelling of the gums
Bleeding or red gums
Loose teeth
Bad breath
Bumps or lumps in the mouth
Bloody or ropey saliva

How to prevent gum disease?

Though gum disease in dogs is common, we can do something to prevent it.

Daily brushing

You can clean dog's teeth daily by using the toothpaste that can be swallowed by dogs. It is very effective for preventing plaque and tartar. It is better to brush dogs’ teeth twice a day.

Regular oral exams, and cleanings

Up to 60% of the symptoms are hidden beneath the gum line. You can take your dog in for regular oral exams and cleanings. It can find out the problem in your dog’s teeth immediately.

Chewing toys or treats

Special dog chew toys and treats can help reduce or delay plaque and tartar formation. You can offer some safe toys and treats such as rubber balls, thin rawhide strips that bend and rubbery toys for your dog to chew every day.
